Even though National Snack Food Month is coming to an end, snacking is something that we do each and every day. Finding a balance between taste, nutrition and convenience can be a challenge, but there are certain foods that will satisfy all three. For example, peanuts are one of the most popular snack foods and number one snack nut, due to its nutritional benefits. Peanuts not only have fiber, protein and good fats, but they also help you sustain energy throughout the day.
Registered dietitians and nutrition experts, Rebecca Scritchfield, MA, RD, HFS, and Toby Amidor, MS RD, explain ways that they like to incorporate snack peanuts into their diets and why they recommend eating peanuts to family, friends and clients.
“As a mom of three kids, I tend to run around driving my kids to and from activities many days of the week. Since I know I have a hectic schedule, I make sure to be prepared by stashing a few snack packs of peanuts in my purse. This way I am guaranteed to have a protein-packed snack that will help satisfy my hunger until I get home. Peanuts are a quick and easy, filling snack. Peanuts contain good fats and protein, both which takes the body a little longer to digest which helps keep you satisfied and curb hunger until your next meal.” - Toby Amidor, MS RD, nutrition expert and author of The Greek Yogurt Kitchen: More Than 130 Delicious, Healthy Recipes for Every Meal of the Day
“I love to pack peanuts in the shell in a portable container and take them with me everywhere. If I get hit by hunger, the peanuts are there. The shells help pace the eating to be more mindful too. Peanuts are portable and fresh so they are easy to take with you no matter where you go. They taste great on their own or with most fruits to make a powerful energizing snack.” - Rebecca Scritchfield, Registered Dietitian and Expert on Health and Happiness
